Turn Out The Lights - The Party's Over!

Well, I believe that the Chiefs' season is officially over. I know, I know - they're not "mathematically" eliminated yet, but it's only a matter of time. With the last two losses at the pathetic Browns and home vs. the Ravens, well, that pretty much does it.

I can't say that I'm too disappointed. Most of the time, disappointment is caused when something negative happens that we didn't expect or foresee. This collapse was expected. Herm has a career below .500 record and it's his first year with an old, rebuilding team. Our offensive line isn't near what it was a few years ago and our defense is, well, our defense. Granted, they have looked better this year than in the past, but just can't get stops when they have to (see 14 point lead in the 4th quarter vs. Cleveland).

The offensive output has been inconsistent at best. Green is getting hit time after time after time and he's shown that he just can't take care of the ball under pressure. I don't totally blame him. Our tackles are getting blown past like the white nordic guy in the Olympic 100 meter dash. I also blame the coaches for their highly predictable play calling. I've been calling it at home for weeks - 1st down run, 2nd down run, 3rd down pass - especially when they have the lead. When an offense with a poor line gets predictable, forget it.

Just another Chiefs season. They'll finish 9-7, maybe even 10-6, miss the playoffs and leave us wondering the entire off-season "what if they could've pulled out Miami" or "why did we get blown out by a putrid Steeler's team?" Just brace yourselves for a pretty extensive rebuilding period over the next few years. It's going to be pretty tough to replace an entire O-line while keeping a running back healthy in the process. Oh, and the QB is old too with Brody Croyle waiting in the wings. In the immortal words of Dire Straits - "My future's so bright, I gotta wear shades."

I agree completely. I don't blame Trent completely, but he has not looked the same since his return from concussionville. OK, he looked good for 1 game against the HORRIBLE Cleveland Browns. I sympathize though, I'd probably have happy feet back there too if I saw John Wellbourn and Jordan Black standing between me and a one way ticket to another cat scan. By the way, the song you quoted was by a husband and wife duo called Timbuk 3. Don't ask, I just know.

I think we just need to accept that this team is mediocre. Even with Trent running at 100%, how much better does that really make us? We still would have to lean on LJ too much, because our receivers are terrible. Seriously, try to find a worse 1-2 punch starting in the NFL than Eddie Kennison and Samie Parker. Can't be done. It was all covered up the last few years because our line was ridiculously good.

Our defense isn't too bad, but we are WEAK up the middle. When they're playing well, the DT's are serviceable. When they're not, it's like swiss cheese.

We have a HUGE rebuilding project staring us in the face over the next couple of years. We had a window under Vermeil, but just didn't have the defense to get it done. The sad thing is, this defense might have been able to pull it off, but our offense is nowhere near where it needs to be.

And let's face it, even if they would have won the last two, and even if they end up making the playoffs, they're not winning the division. That means a road playoff game, and you both know how good we are on the road. 1 and done!

Looks like Lamar isn't going to be with us much longer. I'm interested if his son(s) will make some good changes, leave things the same, or drive it into the dirt. We are only a few plays from being a early 1980's Chiefs squad again!

I hear that Clark Hunt is a real douche, so your guess is as good as mine. I think they need to dump Green (actually, he should retire), sign huard to a 2-year deal and see if Croyle pans out. Then they need to hit the draft for some linemen and receivers.

Oh, and I will say I told you so after Herm decided to bench Green this week. He never should have started after his vacation to LaLa Land. So, I told you so.

Herm won't bench Green in favor of Huard. I still think he gives us the best chance to win.

And I also think it's more likely to just throw Croyle in there next year if Green ends up retiring. The more likely scenario is Green plays one more year, then we have Croyle or another draftee/FA starting in '08.

So much for that. Herm just said he's starting Huard Sunday night.
