BCS Rantings

It is that time of year! The end of the college football season and, I must admit, a disappointing one. Once again, Mizzou has a solid season, but folds up in the big games and ends up in some random bowl game. I'm not sure if they are officially invited yet, but I do know that it's not going to mean anything. The bowl season has turned into a complete joke to me with 64 out of the 119 total Division 1-A teams going to bowls. I can't wait to see the TCU vs. Northern Illinois match-up in the highly touted Poinsettia Bowl (not joking). Ugh!

I also hate the BCS. It seems that it always comes down to one team that is the undisputed #1 and a coin-flip #2. Ohio State is obviously the best team in the nation and deserves their top ranking and slot in the national championship game. Their opponent is where it gets fuzzy. USC is #2 and I think it's dead wrong. Michigan should be number two right now. They have only one loss on the season and it was to the top ranked OSU team. USC only has one loss, but it was to an UNRANKED Oregon State team. How does a national championship contender lose to Oregon State??? Ridiculous. The only reason that Michigan is not number two is that the coasts don't want to see a midwest rematch. It's stupid, utterly stupid.

I had the chance to see Northwest Missouri State play in their second round playoff game over Thanksgiving Weekend. It was awesome! No I'm not a huge fan, but it's playoff football. Why is Division 1-A the only level that refuses a playoff? I'll tell you why - $$$$$$$$$$$$$!!! It's dead wrong that money determines games when the players don't get paid. There is no way to reationalize the BCS anymore, period. Anyone who thinks it's a good idea can suck it.

BCS is a joke. I don't understand why they don't think a playoff would make as much money, if not more, than bowl games. There is so much more emphasis placed on national championships than there used to be. A lot more money involved too. They need to play off the top 8 teams and get a definite champion. Did you hear? The University of Utah is playing Tulsa in the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl at 6 PM on ESPN on December 23rd!!!

Correction - those who RATIONALIZE the BCS AND those who make fun of my spelling can suck it.

Michigan as #2? Surely you jest.

Remember a few years ago, when Nebraska played Miami in the Rose Bowl? There was a national outcry because Nebraska played in the national championship game, yet didn't even win its own conference. That year, Oregon won the Pac-10 with one loss, and they were shut out of the national title picture (sound familiar?).

Granted, this situation is a little different since both teams are in the same conference, but give me a break. Number two in your own league should not be good enough for a shot at number 2 in the nation, especially after you just lost to number 1.

How fair is it to Ohio State? They already beat Michigan. Give them a shot at someone else. Chances are, it won't even matter, because they're probably going to annhiliate anyone put in front of them. Give them a shot at USC, Florida or even Boise State. But don't give me a replay of a game that we have already seen. What's the point?

My argument is that in order to be eligible for a national championship in college football, you have to at least win your conference. It's absurd that we could see a team win a national championship without winning their own league. STOOPID.

End Rant

Further, Michigan was never even really in that game. They scored a TD late to make it look reasonably close in the final score, but Ohio State was never in any real danger of losing that game.

Oh, and Nebraska was waxed by Chris Brown and the Colorado Buffs back in '01. Colorado ended up getting smoked 38-16 by Oregon in the Fiesta Bowl.

So you're telling me that if the #2 team in the nation just happens to be in the same conference as the #1 team, they're just screwed!!! How is that fair? USC plays a putred PAC 10 schedule and win it, so they should be #2??? Florida's out of it, 'cause they'll lose to Arkansas this weekend. Who else is there? Oh, and I can't even believe that you mentioned Boise State - Mountain West - Ridiculous.

I would rather watch Boise State get a shot at Ohio State than I would a Michigan team that already got drubbed by them.

My point is, this isn't boxing. There shouldn't be any rematch. Let's pretend for a second that Oklahoma and Nebraska were respectively #1 and #2 in the nation right now. This weekend, Oklahoma beats Nebraska. Why on earth would they play again for the National Championship? Give #3 a chance. Or #4. Or #11, I don't care.

Michigan vs. Ohio State was a 2 score game that Michigan brought to within 3 late, with no real drama at any point during the game. Every time Michigan got close, Ohio State widened their lead. I don't know how else to say it...Michigan should not play Ohio State for the national title.

Actually, Boise State plays in the WAC, but what's the difference? They play some tough opponents like Idaho, Utah State, Louisiana Tech, New Mexico State, Hawaii, Fresno State, San Jose State, and Nevada. There are at least 12 to 15 teams that should be named before Boise State even gets a thought.
Michigan needs to play Ohio State again for the title. It's the best game out there. If Ohio State wants to win it all, they need to play the best to do it, even if it means to play a team twice to do it.
It doesn't matter, even if that game happens and Michigan wins, there will be an outcry and they will have to split the title since they would both finish with one loss.

I think the only logical solution here is to let Ohio State play Notre Dame for the national title. Hey, it would bring in the highest ratings...right?

Big Shaky said...

Ratings. Yes. That's what the media wants to see anyway.
By the way, It is cold as balls here today!

I think that if Arkansas beats Florida and wins the SEC title, they should play Ohio State. But that's the problem here - people get to say what they think. Just have a playoff like D-1AA, D-2 or D-3 and there is no controversy.

Arkansas can't play for the national title if USC beats UCLA. USC beat Arkansas like a drum AT Arkansas, so there's no chance of the Hogs leapfrogging the Trojans.

The fact that you just said "hogs leapfrogging trojans" just amuses me for some reason. I know, knock off a few more IQ points now.
