Playoff Posturing

Ok, ok - enough political reteric. Let's get back to the sports. Our friendly neighborhood Brent brought up a decent point the other day. Why do playoff baseball games happen every night, while other sports offer players much more (sometimes way too much) rest? Thank you for bringing this up, Brent, and yes, I will address it.

My main theory behind this is that the baseball season is just too long to begin with. Is it really necessary to have 162 regular season games? I like baseball a lot - I don't love baseball, but I like it. Would anyone really have a problem with a, say, 120-game season? By the time we get to the playoffs, I think they have to play games every day to beat the cold weather. I guess it is a good idea to finish the season before Thanksgiving.

As far as other sports go, I think the NFL has it right, except for the 2-week break before the Super Bowl. Hockey has it all wrong. Not necessarily with timing between games, but with the number of teams that get to the post-season. Is it really necessary to allow literally half of the teams in? Is it still that special to be a "playoff team" if you have a 50/50 shot at getting in before the season even starts? Makes no sense. The NBA is ok, but has way too much time in between games. Basketball players are arguably in the best shape of any professional athletes, so do they really need 4 days rest between games. Fatigue doesn't play a part in late season an playoff games, period.

Somebody get Stern and Selig on the phone, because there has got to be a happy medium.

I also love the NFL's playoff format because the best two teams in each conference get a bye into the 2nd round. I think that is a great idea and it's surprising that nobody else has copied their formula.

Speaking of hockey, one of their problems is that there are just too many teams, period. Does anybody really care about the Columbus Blue Jackets, Minnesota Wild, Nashville Predators or the Atlanta Thrashers (I actually had to look up the last two). Didn't think so.

The NHL playoffs also last for about as long as the Baseketball playoffs. The only people who enjoy the NHL are Canadians anyway, and they can keep it for all I care.

I agree with the hockey bit. The only way to make it more appealing would be that all hockey players play the game like the Hanson brothers in the 1977 classic "Slapshot". Hilarious!
And shouldn't they just start the NBA season with the playoffs? Does anyone really watch this stuff anymore other than the post season?
